The House

A Bengal workshop, bench to bride

Karmakar Jewellery Palace is a family jewellery house in West Bengal. Our karigars work in the Bengali idiom — the weight of a bala, the fall of a sitahar, the fit of a chik — and every piece leaves the bench hallmarked, weighed in front of you and billed line by line.

  • BIS hallmarked 22K and 18K gold with a HUID on every piece.
  • Certified natural diamonds — the certificate stays with you.
  • Made-to-order bridal sets sketched with you, not picked off a tray.
  • Old gold exchange, repair and polishing at the same counter.

Five chapters of Bengali gold

Sitahar & Haar

The necklace, from a single chain to seven layers

The sitahar is the centrepiece of a Bengali bridal set: a long, layered necklace, often with pendant medallions, worn over a snug chik at the throat. We make both in 22K, with stone-set or plain gold work, and balance the weight so the layers sit flat on silk.

Bala & Chur

Round, solid, worn for decades

A bala is a solid round bangle; a chur is its broader, engraved cousin. Together with the noa and the red-and-white shankha-pola, they make up the married Bengali woman's wrist. We size each bangle to the hand and finish the inside as carefully as the outside, because that is the part you feel every day.

Jhumka & Chandbali

Bells, crescents and the full kaan

The jhumka's bell swings; the chandbali's crescent frames the face; the kaan-pasha covers the whole ear for a bride. We hollow-cast the larger pieces so they stay light enough to wear through a long evening, and set pearls and stones on secure gold posts.

Purity & Hallmark Guide

Know exactly what you are paying for

Karat tells you how much of the metal is gold. The hallmark proves it. Here is how to read both.

24K999 fine

Pure gold

99.9% gold. Too soft for daily jewellery, so it is used for coins and bars — the form you buy for Dhanteras or as an investment.

22K916 hallmark

Traditional jewellery

91.6% gold alloyed for strength. The standard for Bengali bridal and daily-wear pieces: sitahar, bala, chik, chains.

18K750 hallmark

Diamond & stone settings

75% gold. Harder, so prongs hold diamonds securely. Used for solitaires, cluster rings and lightweight modern pieces.

925sterling silver

Sterling silver

92.5% silver. Used for filigree jewellery, coins, puja articles and annaprashan gifts. Bright or oxidised finish.

How to read the hallmark

Three marks inside every gold piece

Under BIS hallmarking, each piece of gold jewellery is laser-marked with three things. Ask to see them under the loupe before you pay — we will show you.

  1. BIS logo — the Bureau of Indian Standards mark, proof the piece was tested at a BIS-recognised assaying centre.
  2. Purity / fineness — 22K916, 18K750 and so on. This is the number your bill rate must match.
  3. HUID — a six-character alphanumeric Hallmark Unique ID. Each piece has its own; it can be verified in the BIS Care app.

Our designer draws the piece and we give a written estimate: approximate weight, making charge and stone cost, at that day's rate.

Crafting

Karigars make the piece by hand. For bridal orders we share progress photographs and invite you for a fitting before finishing.

Hallmark & delivery

The finished piece is BIS hallmarked with its HUID, weighed in front of you, and handed over with an itemised bill and certificate.

Transparent Billing

How to read your bill

A fair jewellery bill has five lines, and you should be able to check each one with a calculator. Ours always look like this.

  1. 1
Gold rate × net weightThe day's rate for the purity on the hallmark (22K or 18K), multiplied by the gold weight after stones are deducted.
  2. 2
Making chargeThe karigar's work, quoted per gram or as a percentage. Agreed before the order, not added after.
  3. 3
Stone chargeDiamonds, pearls or coloured stones listed separately by weight, never hidden inside the gold weight.
  4. 4
GSTGovernment tax as applicable, shown as its own line.
  5. 5
Old gold adjustmentIf you exchanged old gold, its tested value appears as a deduction so you can see exactly what you paid.

Yes. Every piece of gold jewellery we sell carries the BIS logo, the purity mark (22K916 or 18K750) and a six-character HUID. You can verify the HUID in the BIS Care app, and we will show you the marks under the loupe before billing.

Gold rate for the day multiplied by net gold weight, plus the making charge, plus stones (if any), plus GST. Each appears as a separate line on the bill. The rate changes daily, so quotes are valid for the period stated on them.

Yes, from any jeweller. We test the purity in front of you, explain any deduction for stones or impurities, and set the value against your new purchase. The adjustment is printed on the bill.
